How does LifeVac work?

Can anyone use LifeVac?

At what age/weight can LifeVac be used?

While there is no minimum age for LifeVac to be used, the pediatric mask is recommended for individuals weighing at least 10 kg. However, it has been successfully used to save the life of a baby just 3 weeks old.

Can LifeVac potentially push an obstruction further down or injure a victim by accident?

No, LifeVac will never push an object further into the airway. Its one-way valve ensures that air escapes through the vents on the device, and not into the victim, when the plunger is pushed. When you pull the plunger up, it creates suction to remove the obstruction.

Can LifeVac cause damage to the lungs or body of a choking victim?

No, LifeVac has been independently tested and proven to be 100% safe to use. The push and pull motion creates only the necessary amount of suction to remove the obstruction and does not cause any damage to the lungs or body of a choking victim.

To better illustrate this, LifeVac has a suction volume of 200 ml. If you compare this to the volume of a lung, which after full exhalation is around 1200 ml, you can easily see that LifeVac uses only the suction force required to remove an airway obstruction.

Should LifeVac be used before abdominal thrusts?

While LifeVac is intended to be used as a backup after traditional protocols fail, it can be a critical life-saving device—especially for those you may be unable to perform traditional techniques on, such as those who are pregnant, elderly, or frail.

Is LifeVac effective in any position?

Yes, LifeVac can be used standing, sitting, or lying down and has successfully been used in all of these positions.

Can LifeVac be self-administered?

Yes, LifeVac can be used on yourself, making it vital for those who live alone. It has already been used this way to save a life.

Can LifeVac be used on wheelchair users or those who are pregnant?

Yes, LifeVac is extremely important for individuals in wheelchairs and those who are pregnant, as it may be difficult to perform current BLS protocols on them.

Can LifeVac be used multiple times?

Yes and no... LifeVac can be used multiple times if the obstruction is not dislodged on the first application.

But the LifeVac device is a one-time-use-only apparatus. LifeVac should be replaced after use in a choking emergency.

There are two main reasons why we replace the LifeVac unit after it has been used:

1. To avoid a damaged LifeVac. We don’t know how the LifeVac unit has been handled during a panic situation.
2. For hygienic and safety reasons. We don’t know how the LifeVac was cleaned after a choking emergency. When cleaned incorrectly or with certain cleaning agents, this might cause damage to the device.

That’s why we choose to replace every unit that has been used with a new one for FREE.

Does the LifeVac expire? When should masks be replaced?

While the LifeVac device itself never expires, our mask manufacturer recommends replacing the masks every two to three years, or by the expiration date on the packaging. We also recommend periodically inspecting the masks for any signs of wear.

Why shouldn't I keep the mask attached to the unit?

We do not recommend storing the unit with a mask attached, as in a choking emergency, you will determine which size mask—adult or pediatric—is appropriate. If the wrong mask is already attached, it could make it difficult to switch to the correct size and delay your response.

Can LifeVac be stored in extreme temperatures?

It is recommended to avoid prolonged storage in extreme temperatures; however, testing shows LifeVac functions properly after such exposure.

How do I remove the mask from the unit?

Grip the mask with your four fingers outside and thumb inside; then twist and pull. Note: the mask does not need to be flush with the face of the device. If the mask is inserted too far into the unit, it may be difficult to remove.
